Use complex number representation for vertex coordinates,
...
ie. (x, y) becomes x + iy. This gives a bit of a speedup
over repeating stuff for multiple arrays, and lets you
keep using the numpy +- operators (unlike structured
numpy arrays)

Factor-of-2 speedup on code that currently takes ~20% of the runtime --
turns out cache is good stuff.
